![]() ![]() This gives us several options regarding the incoming angle. We know from the section that our box boom hanging positions can put a fixture as low as 7' above the stage deck, and as high as 17'. A little black triangle placed into the barrel of the fixture denotes the presence of a gobo. The beam angle is very wide (48°), so I need to use the widest angle instrument available, a 50° Shakespeare ERS. ![]() I see from this diagram that I only lose about a foot or 18" of floor by the shadow of the wall, and I can live with that, so we'll put this system on the 4th electric. By choosing a diagonal angle on the ground plan, I can plot where the light would hang, and the shadow that would ultimately be cast by the wall. I'll figure out exactly what the light is going to do by doing a quick section view. I'd really like to get the look of the shallower angle from Fourth electric, but I'm not really sure whether I'll be able to get enough coverage of the upstage area because of the wall. Should we use Third electric and have a slightly more downlight feeling, or have a shallower angle by pushing from the 4th electric. Related somewhat to the side light system is the system of diagonal backlights with leafy gobos. The placement of the 6 lights for the upstage front light areas is similar to that of the downstage. The beam angle from this position is about 20° which is right in the neighborhood of a 40° instrument, so that's what we'll use. If the front of house position is a truss, you might change the trim of this as well. You would then perhaps go back to the masking to see if you could sneak in the 1st electric more, or overhang the lights on the FOH pipe. In some cases, when consistency is immensely important, this 7° difference in angle might be a big deal. The 1st electric position is a little steeper than 45 at 47°, but this will be much closer to the 40° that we had in the downstage positions. The 2nd electric is almost a top light- 64°. The FOH pipe would give us a 28° angle- too shallow. We'll look at a section view of these three possibilities to come up with the best angle. By striking the same angle as the front row, we come up with three separate possibilities for placement: 2nd electric, 1st electric and the FOH pipe. The second row of front lights may take a little more work. ![]()
